Skye Townsend, is a young multi-talented entertainer who is quickly becoming a force in the entertainment industry. The singer/actress is only 19 year's old and already has quite the resume, with over 5 million subscribers on her Youtube channel which features musical covers, hilarious comedy bits as well as personal advice from beauty tips to relationship advice. In 2012, Skye released her well praised EP "Vomit". The EP showcases her writing skills, extraordinary vocal range and even gives us a taste of some spoken word. This year Skye released a track titled "X-Talk" a song which talks about the every so present EX who just won't disappear from your life.
While she is busy working on new musical projects, Skye is currently focusing more on the acting aspect of her career. I was able to talk more about her career, fashion and why she chose not to use her celebrity last name to make it big. Check out the interview after the jump.
Hi Skye, how are you?
I'm blessed -thank you.
You started your career on Youtube and gained a large fan base soon after, what most people love about you is that from the very beginning you pressed the fact that you "Skye Townsend the artist and NOT "Skye Townsend, daughter of Robert Townsend, trying to be an artist". Why was it so important you do this completely on your own?
It
was important for me to emphasize that because people are always skeptical when
it comes to celebrity children. I wanted to make it clear that I don't hope to
ride his shadow but kick down my own doors. I am not my last name.
Was the process of getting your foot in the door more challenging as oppose to other young artist who use their celebrity connections to rise up?
Definitely.
I grew up in the middle of Black Hollywood. Half of the greats were Aunts and
Uncles to me. I chose to use the internet as a platform to get my talent out
there and threw Youtube, I was contacted by some amazing people and networks.
How would you describe your sound?
My
sound vocally is R&B. However, I infuse a lot of my music with Jazz and
world music.
You've been compared to Toni Braxton, Beyonce and Whitney Houston... who or what are some of your influences?
Those
are all compliments and humbling comparisons. I am definitely influenced by all
three. I adore Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald as well. I look up to Bob
Marley lyrically.
What is an important aspect about you that you may think some upcoming singers may be lacking? What sets you apart?
I
write my own music. I think it's sad that that sets me apart because so many
artists used to write their own material and really master the art of
storytelling and connecting to their fans. I also am chasing something bigger.
I don't plan on doing music my whole life. My ultimate goal is to be able to
travel and be a full blown Humanitarian. I hope to make music that inspires and
is relatable until then.
You have become well known with your spoken word poetry, as an artist how important is poetry to you?
Real
lyrics are poetry. I adore spoken word. I spend my Tuesday nights at
the poetry lounge. Inspires me.
Your first EP Vomit was a huge success and one of my personal favorites, since then you've dropped some new material for us like "X-Talk" but do you have any more projects we should be looking out for, possibly a tour?
I
will drop another project very soon. Until then, I have two more videos and
songs dropping during the month of September. However, acting has become a big
focus and I am just riding the wave. Whatever comes, comes
.
Okay Let's Talk fashion! How would you describe your style and who are some of your fashion icons?
Lisa
Bonet is a queen to me. I adore her style. I like to be comfortable. I don't
like wearing many clothes. I hate shoes. I perform barefoot to be honest. I
like to call it hippie chic. Lol!
You have your own clothing line BRAE Clothing with your cousin, what made you decide to start up your own?
I
have always made my own clothes at home when I couldn't afford to buy the
original with my own money. I love fashion and wanted to drop a small line that
represented something positive. BRAE stands for "Believe in yourself,
Remain positive And Execute your vision."
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Hopefully
happy, still in love, and still working in this industry.
This a completely random question! What is your one guilty pleasure when it comes to food?
BASKIN & ROBBINS!
Thank you for taking time to chat with us! We look forward to hearing new material from you,
xo
